Arena, a part of World of Warcraft that is being enjoyed by the vast WoW population. The ones who have played the game for years know - what, how and when is the best moment to use or do several small things which might change the outcome of a match. But what about the others, World of Warcraft spectators or players who have just started to play? To help these new faces, "The Sunday WoWst" will bring you different WoW articles that might just help you improve your game.
The first of the series is about the difference a simple server (realm) choice can make and what and race to chose.
Many gamers might not see it, but to get good at World of Warcraft arena, you must not only put in a lot of hours of practice, but also compete at your own level. Like in all other competitive games, you shouldn't jump in versus a top team and expect to learn something from them straight away. You have to start playing the less skilled teams and only then think about the medium or higher ones.
Yes, World of Warcraft arena queues sort the rating levels so that your opponent will have the same rating as you do, but not always these teams will be the same level as you are. In fact around 70% of the new teams will consist of long time players who know a lot more than a beginner does. But there is a way to increase your chances to play versus weaker teams.
As most people know Blizzard Entertainment made their game to have a special Battlegroup system. A Battlegroup is a bridge that connects several servers and allows players from different realms to battle against each-other. Each continent has their strongest PvP Battlegroups where top teams transfer to compete at the highest level and for Europe it undoubtedly is Cyclone. So if you're a new player who wants to become good in the right conditions, you should avoid the strongest Battlegroups and instead chose a server from a different one.
Later on for a small fee you can transfer your account to the better Battlegroup.

After choosing the right server, a player has to decide what class does he want and more importantly what race. For a competitive player the choice of a race should not be decided by the good looks, but by the unique racial traits that work best with their class. The right extra passive and active skills are worth more than some might imagine. For an example the Undead Will of the Forsaken that removes any Charm, Fear and Sleep effect for the player, will always work better for a rogue than the few second silence from the Bloodelf racial. The most popular choices for Horde are the Undead and Tauren.
Quote:Undead:
Will of the Forsaken (instant) 2 min cooldown - Removes any Charm, Fear and Sleep effect.
Cannibalize (instant) 2 min cooldown - When activated, regenerates 7% of total health every 2 sec for 10 sec. Only works on Humanoid or Undead corpses within 5 yds. Any movement, action, or damage taken while Cannibalizing will cancel the effect.
Shadow Resistance (passive) - Reduces the chance you will be hit by Shadow spells by 2%.
Tauren:
War Stomp (instant) 2 min cooldown - Stuns up to 5 enemies within 8 yds for 2 sec.
Endurance (passive) - Base Health increased by 5%
Nature Resistance (passive) - Reduces the chance you will be hit by Nature spells by 2%.
On the Alliance side people tend to chose more than two main races. Even so the most popular race is Human, followed by Gnomes who are handy for their small size, Night Elves for choosing druids and Dwarves for hunters. All racial bonuses can be found on Blizzards World of Warcraft info page.
Quote:Human:
Perception (passive) - Increases your Stealth detection.
The Human Spirit (passive) - Spirit increased by 3%
Sword Specialization (passive) - Expertise with Swords and Two-Handed Swords increased by 3.
Mace Specialization (passive) - Expertise with Maces and Two-Handed Maces increased by 3.
Every Man for Himself (instant) 2 min cooldown - Removes all movement impairing effects and all effects which cause loss of control of your character. This effect shares a cooldown with other similar effects.
These small details are just a minor part of the many things that are required for a new player to know in order for him to become good. So next week "The Sunday WoWst" will come back with more tips and tricks on how to improve your Arena game.

| Good read, quite usefull for wow noobs like me :D |
"Arena, a part of World of Warcraft that is being enjoyed by the vast WoW population"
Incorrect, the slightest majority of WoW players actually do Arena.
"For an example the Undead Will of the Forsaken that removes any Charm, Fear and Sleep effect for the player, will always work better for a rogue than the few second silence from the Bloodelf racial."
Wrong, WoTF now shares CD with PvP trinkets such as Medallion of the Horde. Thus, making Blood Elf the best racial for Rogue (Horde Side).

The article is wildly incorrect and shallow. First of all, taurens racial is anything but instant - stomp takes 0.5 seconds to cast and is prone to delays due to damage taken. While it might not seem like much, it renders it useless in many situations.
Also, racials are going to get changed in upcoming Cataclysm expansion, so choices made today are moot at best.
If you are a total newbie to WoW, here is the list of things you will need to start being competetive in arenas:
1) level 80 character of a class that you are comfortable with
2) competetive talent build
3) PvP equipment
4) very good team
That takes many months to achieve and involves many long and boring hours before you can even start doing serious PvP.
WoW may be considered as the esiest and most user-friendly MMO out there, but it's arenas are not. It's quick, brutal and extremely challenging. Probably most challenging online PvP environment to date. |
