Just a few moments ago, BashAndSlash published an interview with Infinity Ward's community manager fourzerotwo which can be found below. During the interview, fourzerotwo made the shocking announcement that there will be no dedicated servers for the PC version of Modern Warfare 2, which would be a disaster for the competitive scene.
"Why would they want to turn a PC game into a console game?", the community is wondering. An old article has just come to our attention which might explain just why IW decided to take such a drastic step. In the article HERE you can see how IW says that an immense part of the COD4 copies online consists of pirate copies of the game, all with cracked CD keys.
Why would they want to invest in a PC game when the biggest part of it gets hacked and then distributed for free on pirate websites. Add that the PC sale of COD4 is only 14% of all sales then it might become clear that IW is doing the right thing to focus on the console platforms.
*UPDATE3*
Fourzerotwo has just released an article on his page which explains the entire 'IWNET' feature and answers all questions on how this could work. The good thing is that we now have a clear view on what we will and will not be able to do. The bad news is that it all appears to be made for the average player who just wants to take the game out of the box and play a game, while setting up a private server now takes tweaking it all yourself.
*UPDATE 2*
Robert 'fourzerotwo' Bowling, Infinity Ward's Community Mananger, has just made a twitter comment which states 'Definitely made a big wave, and the response will not be ignored. I'll ensure everyone at IW sees the petitions and responses to it.'
Could IW be rethinking its decision and bring back dedicated servers to MW2? We will keep you updated.
*UPDATE*
The game has also been rated 18+ by the British Board of Film Classification, this causes even more problems for people who want to buy the game. The official title also appears to be 'Modern Warfare 2' as there was no Call of Duty mentioned in the BBFC report.

They Wonder Why People Don't Make PC Games Any More
On another PC related note, we pulled some disturbing numbers this past week about the amount of PC players currently playing Multiplayer (which was fantastic). What wasn't fantastic was the percentage of those numbers who were playing on stolen copies of the game on stolen / cracked CD keys of pirated copies (and that was only people playing online).
Not sure if I can share the exact numbers or percentage of PC players with you, but I'll check and see; if I can I'll update with them. As the amount of people who pirate PC games is astounding. It blows me away at the amount of people willing to steal games (or anything) simply because it's not physical or it's on the safety of the internet to do.
Summary of interview: General
- IW partnering through Steam is what you will see in the future. Matchmaking is not through Steam, but IW.NET is run in conjunction with Steam.
- GSP's will no longer be renting out servers.
- No PunkBuster. VAC will be used as an anti cheat.
- Retail distribution: Pre-orders will get a disk. Or you could order from Steam.
- DLC may now need to be paid for - not confirmed.
- Piracy was only a small reason for going to IW.NET - not the whole reason.
Clans
- No more clan servers. Private matches, replace clan servers.
- Listen servers will connect to each other.
- IW.NET/Steam will replace the community server admin
Competitive Gaming
- Competitive gaming has changed forever.
- It might be possible in the future for IW engineers to load a "competitive" setting on IW.NET, but it is far from a guarantee. It might also never happen.
Modding
- Modding the game is now very much in question. Fourzerotwo had no info on modding. However, it appears that there will be no mods or maps for MW2.
- Modding in SpecOps? Unknown.
It might not be good for the PC gamers, but hopefully people will learn their lesson and stop cracking games before other developers follow IW aswell, which could destroy more competitive scenes.
if its true, its gonna be the end for mw2 competitively imo. But I can see why tbh... from a business point of view it makes no sense to invest in an easy hackable platform
#22 thats irrelevant for IW tho, all they care about is sales numbers.
Im not saying IW did good here, from business point of view its definitely good but from 'gamer' point of view its ridiculous. Let's hope its still decent like Left4Dead is.
ye like the music industry against piracy then dont want understand that piracy dont ruin a game or a music, but share them to all the world with more profit to the big company
